Early Life in Peru

Nicolás C. was born in 1972 in Lima, Peru, and grew up in the Miraflores district. From an early age he demonstrated an exceptional academic drive, consistently achieving the highest grades in his class throughout his school years. His father, a civil engineer with a disciplined military upbringing, proudly celebrated his academic achievements, often nicknaming him “Mr. Twenty,” referencing the highest possible grade in the Peruvian grading system.

Despite his strong academic focus, Nicolás maintained a balanced childhood that included surfing daily with his brothers along the Pacific coast near his home. These experiences helped shape both his discipline and his appreciation for perseverance and challenge.

While still in high school, Nicolás began tutoring other students in order to earn some personal income and support himself. This early tutoring experience would later become the foundation of his future career.

Academic Background

In 1990 Nicolás was admitted to Universidad del Pacífico, one of the most prestigious economics and business universities in Peru. The transition from high school to university required intense preparation, which he completed through a rigorous preparatory academy.

During his first year at university, Nicolás experienced a profound personal setback with the passing of his mother. The loss affected his academic performance for several years. However, he ultimately recovered and completed his degree with the highest academic distinction, graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.

Upon graduation, he received a cash award recognizing his academic achievement. Nicolás used this award to begin experimenting with small entrepreneurial ventures, which, although not immediately successful, sparked his long-term interest in business creation.

Early Professional Experience

After graduating from university, Nicolás joined Interbank, one of Peru’s leading financial institutions at the time. There he gained valuable experience in finance, business operations, and project management while working on several important initiatives within the organization.

Although he achieved professional stability and recognition, Nicolás continued exploring entrepreneurial projects outside of his primary job. This persistent curiosity about entrepreneurship would eventually lead him toward a completely different career path.

Moving to the United States

Inspired by the entrepreneurial culture he read about in publications such as Newsweek and Time, Nicolás decided to pursue graduate studies in the United States. His first attempt at applying to American business schools was unsuccessful, forcing him to reflect on the challenges of communicating effectively in a second language and understanding cultural expectations in the United States.

Determined to improve his English and strengthen his candidacy, Nicolás moved to Washington, D.C. in 1999. Early experiences — including something as simple as struggling to order a sandwich due to language barriers — reinforced how difficult it can be to communicate confidently in a second language.

During his first year in Washington, he studied English at Georgetown University’s language program while also interning at early internet startups to gain exposure to American business culture.

MBA Studies and International Perspective

In 2001 Nicolás was accepted into the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University with a full tuition scholarship. There he pursued an MBA with concentrations in Marketing and Information Technology.

While completing his graduate studies, he participated in an academic exchange program in Japan. Living and studying abroad reinforced his belief that learning a foreign language opens the door to deeper cultural understanding and meaningful international experiences.

The Origins of SpanishBlackbelt

After completing his MBA in 2003, Nicolás returned to Washington, D.C. and began searching for professional opportunities. However, the economic downturn following the dot-com crash and the Enron scandal made it particularly difficult for foreign MBA graduates to secure employment.

With financial resources becoming limited, Nicolás returned to an activity he knew well from his youth: tutoring. This time, however, he focused on teaching Spanish — a skill increasingly sought after in the United States.

His ability to connect with students and build their confidence in speaking a second language quickly generated strong demand. Soon he found himself teaching up to twelve hours per day. Instead of seeking traditional employment, he decided to transform this tutoring activity into a formal business.

In 2004 Nicolás founded SpanishBlackbelt and hired the first tutor to join the program.

Building SpanishBlackbelt

Starting a language school from the ground up was not easy. Nicolás continuously refined the teaching methodology by carefully observing what worked best for students and what did not. Feedback from both tutors and learners helped shape the personalized learning approach that defines SpanishBlackbelt today.

Over the years the school expanded steadily and has now served thousands of students across the United States. SpanishBlackbelt has received recognition for its teaching methodology and maintains an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

Philosophy of Language Learning

SpanishBlackbelt focuses on helping students develop practical conversational Spanish skills as efficiently as possible. Courses emphasize simplicity, personalization, and immersion in real communication situations.

Unlike traditional language schools that rely heavily on large classrooms, SpanishBlackbelt emphasizes small groups, one-on-one tutoring, and live interaction with native Spanish-speaking instructors. Lessons are conducted online or, when possible, in relaxed real-world environments such as coffee shops to encourage natural conversation.

Life Today

Today Nicolás continues to lead SpanishBlackbelt while pursuing his interests in technology, programming, and language learning. He is currently studying Italian and aims to make it the fourth language he speaks fluently, after Spanish, English, and Portuguese.

Outside of work he enjoys scuba diving, snow skiing, wakeboarding, and kiteboarding. Nicolás lives in the United States in a bilingual household and continues to advocate for the transformative power of learning foreign languages.
