Fiestas de la calle San Sebastián, San Juan, Puerto Rico

Las fiestas más grandes de Puerto Rico, las Fiestas de la calle San Sebastián, tienen lugar el tercer fin de semana de enero. Miles de puertorriqueños y visitantes se reúnen en el casco antiguo de San Juan, la capital de Puerto Rico, para celebrar los festejos día y noche.
En sus orígenes esta fiesta comenzó no sólo como una celebración del día de San Sebastián, sino también como recaudación de fondos para mejorar la Iglesia de San José, su calle –San Sebastián–, y la comunidad parroquial. Esta celebración comenzó en los años 1950, aunque no se convirtió en tradición anual hasta 1970.
Hoy en día, las fiestas de San Sebastián han perdido gran parte de su carácter religioso y se han transformado en un festejo que atrae a miles de personas cada año. La tradición ha evolucionado con los años, aunque siempre ha permanecido básicamente como una gran fiesta callejera. Durante el día, la gente se pasea por el centro comiendo comida típica puertorriqueña, como las “frituras” o los “pinchos”, y bebiendo “piña colada”. Durante los cuatro días de fiestas, las calles y el Cuartel de Ballajá se llenan de puestos de artesanías a precios asequibles y músicos locales actúan en los escenarios repartidos por el casco antiguo de San Juan.
La ciudad de San Juan es el lugar perfecto para vivir la verdadera cultura puertorriqueña. Solo recorrer las calles adoquinadas del casco antiguo con sus edificios coloniales, y la muralla que rodea la ciudad, como en las antiguas ciudades europeas, es ya una delicia.
Otro lugar que no te puedes perder es el “Castillo de San Felipe del Morro” (Patrimonio de la humanidad por la UNESCO), una ciudadela del siglo XVI considerada la fortificación más grande del Caribe. Sus vistas a la bahía de San Juan son espectaculares. La Catedral de San Juan Bautista, la segunda catedral más antigua de todo Latinoamérica, y su plaza se merecen también una visita.
Si tienes tiempo para una excursión de un día, es muy recomendable ir a ver el bosque tropical “El Yunque”, un lugar mágico, ideal para hacer caminatas y disfrutar de la asombrosa naturaleza, o la Isla Caja de Muertos, un paraíso total.
Definitivamente, éste es un destino que cautiva.

San Sebastian Street Festival, San Juan, Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico’s largest festival, the San Sebastian Street Festival, takes place every year on the third weekend of January. Thousands of locals and visitors gather in the old part of San Juan –Puerto Rico’s capital– to party all throughout day and night.
The festival began not only as a way to celebrate San Sebastian day, and also to raise money to improve the church of San José, its street –San Sebastian Street–, and the parish community. This celebration started in the 1950s, although it did not become an annual tradition until 1970.
Currently, the festival has lost much of its religious character and has transformed more into a city festivity that attracts thousands of people annually. The tradition has evolved over the years, but essentially it has always been a big street party. During the day, people walk around eating some of Puerto Rico’s traditional food, such as “frituras” (fried food) or “pinchos” (chicken or pork kebabs) and drinking “piña colada”. Throughout the four days of the festival the small streets and “Cuartel de Ballajá” (military barracks) are also full with local artisans’ crafts at very affordable prices, and local musicians perform in the stages scattered in Old San Juan.
San Juan is a perfect place to experience true Puerto Rican culture. Just wandering the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan with its colonial building facades, and the city wall that encloses the city, like old European cities, is already a delight.
Also not to be missed is the “Castillo de San Felipe del Morro” (UNESCO World Heritage Site), a 16th century citadel considered the largest fortification in the Caribbean. From there, the views of San Juan Bay are spectacular. The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, the second-oldest cathedral in Latin America, and its plaza deserves a visit too.
If you have time for a day trip, it is very much recommended to see the Yunque National Rainforest, a magic place ideal for hiking and to enjoy the astonishing nature, or Caja de Muertos Island, a total paradise.
Definitively, this is a destination that captivates.
